Abstract

Packaging is an object used for containers or places that are packaged and provide a protective effect. Plastic packaging is very difficult to recycle (Pengampu, A. D. 2021). However, it is still often used (Suminto. 2017). Edible film is biodegradable plastic packaging that can be consumed in the form of thin layer made from starch deposits that are high in carbohydrates such as corn starch. This literature review aims to examine in depth and compare several journals on the effect of glycerol concentration and the addition of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) on the mechanical and physical properties of corn starch-based edible films and the extent to which the production process can affect the quality of edible films. This research uses the literature study method or literature study using accredited articles. Based on the results of research on corn starch-based edible film, it shows a number of important characteristics in its development. In general, the edible film produced has a relatively low tensile strength, and this value tends to decrease as the concentration of plasticizer (glycerol) used increases. However, the addition of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) as an additive proved effective in improving the mechanical properties and tensile strength of the films, although the value still did not reach the minimum standard set by the Japanese industrial standard (JIS), which is 40 kgf/mm².
