Abstract

According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP, 2020), errors in post-harvest handling, such as not using ice, storing fish in unhygienic containers, and delays in sales, are the main causes of declining fish quality. The objectives of this study were: 1) Describe the conditions of post-harvest handling of fish along the coast of Mataram City, 2) Identify obstacles and factors influencing post-harvest handling, and 3) Formulate appropriate and applicable post-harvest handling strategies. This study used a descriptive-qualitative approach to gain an in-depth understanding of post-harvest fishing business strategies along the coast of Mataram City.

The results indicate that to reduce losses during the west wind season, some of the catch is processed into products such as pindang fish, crackers, shredded fish, or stored in refrigerators. Factors affecting post-harvest management include: lack of knowledge about hygienic fish handling techniques, limited cold storage facilities and infrastructure on ships, minimal training from relevant agencies, and fishing communities' dependence on middlemen. Based on the IFAS and EFAS matrices, the fishery is positioned in quadrant III, namely the WO strategy. Factors supporting the WO strategy include increasing the human resource capacity of fishermen and post-fishing businesses, encouraging product diversification, providing facilities and infrastructure to support post-fishing businesses, strengthening economic institutions in coastal communities, expanding access to capital, developing marketing and business digitalization, strengthening logistics and cold chain systems.
